Kasteel Engelenburg

1570

JACOB I SCHIMMELPENNINCK VAN DER OYE

The first owner of the Engelenburg Castle was Jacob I Schimmelpenninck van der Oye. Ever since wine had been of major importance in the castle, as they exported German wines to the Baltic States. In 1591 Crown Prince Maurits stayed at the Engelenburg Castle during the battle of the IJssel, which signifies the importance of the house and its family. The Earl Hendrik van den Bergh destroyed the Engelenburg Castle in 1624 during the battle of the Veluwe. The Earl was a commander in the Spanish army but the owners of the Engelenburg supported the Family van Oranje-Nassau.
