JACOB I SCHIMMELPENNINCK VAN DER OYE
The first owner of Engelenburg Castle were Jacob I Schimmelpenninck van der Oye. In those days, wine already played an important part in our house, as they exported German wines to the Baltic States. In 1591 Crown Prince Maurits stayed at Engelenburg Castle during the battle of the IJssel, which confirms the importance of the house and it´s family. The Earl Hendrik van den Bergh destroyed Engelenburg Castle in 1624 during the battle of the Veluwe. The Earl was a commander in the Spanish army but the owners of Engelenburg Castle supported the Family van Oranje-Nassau.
